Merlin Autumn Exchange 2020
Likes/Dislikes | Fandom Specific Notes | General Themed Prompts For Any Requested Pairing | Merlin/Morgana | Arthur/Gwen | Balinor/Hunith, Balinor & Merlin, Balinor & Kilgharrah | Gilli/Freya, Gilli & Merlin
To see a detailed list of my general likes and dislikes etc, please refer to THIS POST
NOTE ONE: I prefer AU’s with this fandom either through canon divergence fics, fix-it fics, canon setting AU’s, Reincarnation fics, Modern day setting (especially when real life magic is an element in it) or more extreme AU’s such as a sci-fi, steampunk, apocalaptic, coffee shop, historical etc ....seriously anything, absolutely anything AUish is appreciated and loved when it comes to this fandom.
NOTE TWO: I prefer stories where Balinor either survives or is resurrected when dealing with canon setting stories.
NOTE THREE: I love world building, especially surrounding magic and dragonlord lore...what they can do, what they can’t etc.
NOTE FOUR: DNW’s: Gwen/Lancelot or Merlin/Arthur outside of a friendship relationship, S5 canon plot (canon divergence is fine).
These two will always be one of my favorite pairings. There are just so many different avenues to explore and so much conflicting emotions. Here are two people that were once close friends (with the potential to be something more) who become fierce enemies who are at each other’s throats but they’ve never forgotten what they could have been or lost those feelings. There’s so much anger and hostility not only because of what the other has done, but also because they can’t be what they want to be. Equally there’s the whole what if scenarios? What if Merlin had handled things differently, told Morgana, ignored Kilgarahh etc and actively helped her? How would that have changed things?
I love the different aspects that can be explored here and honestly don’t mind how it’s played. You can have Merlin change tackt and decide to help Morgana more, turn completely and go dark with her, Morgana could also find penance/reform etc….or they could stay at each other's throats etc….whatever I enjoy it all.
These two will forever be my OTP, I absolutely adore their dynamic and how things shifted between them from servant to prince, to equals. The soft teases, the difficulties of their relationship caused by status, the utter adoration they have for one another. I love how Arthur was so hot headed and had this pompous aura to begin with, whilst Gwen was super shy and quiet, held back up her position in life and how both of these personas/masks began to slip with each other and we got to see a new side of them. With Arthur we got to see such a soft side...he really is a hopeless romantic/ Gwen found her voice she became more sure of herself and as such spoke up more she wouldn’t take any nonsense. They compliment each other so well and really do bring out the best in one another.
I LOVE the character of Balinor so much!!! THE BAMF DRAGON LORD OF AWESOMENESS!! Anything with this man would be fantastic. Give me all the feels….I’m ready!
Balinor & Merlin: is the father/son relationship we need more of. There was so much to explore with the dragon lord aspect alone...just so much potential wasted.
Balinor/Hunith: I ship these two so hard, OMFG!! They are everything, just everything….soft, sweet, tragic and beautiful….they deserve more love and exploration! I love these characters and seeing them getting a happy ending instead of the complete tragedy they were originally served.
Balinor & Kilgharrah: There is so much backstory/history here that deserves to be explored more. I have always had this headcanon that Dragonlords and the dragons are connected mentally as well as spiritually aka when a dragon gets hurt the dragonlord will feel it, though it won’t kill/physically cause them harm etc but can cause extreme mental pain/torture especially when that dragon has more of a connection to the Dragonlord. I have always thought that Balinor and Kilgharrah were extremely close, which is the only reason Kilgharrah backed down long enough for Uther to be able to trap him etc.
Gilli was a character that I honestly was so drawn to and felt a great deal of empathy and interest in...I wanted to know more about this young man, it was honestly such a shame we never saw Gilli again. His dynamic with Merlin was wonderful. Gilli was the first person Merlin reveals his magic to and that whole scene was such a powerful moment as well as the end scene between them. Merlin telling him their paths would cross again when magic was finally allowed once more because they were “kin” was just so beautiful.
I also really love the idea of Gilli/Freya. I don’t know they just seem to fit together in my mind and would make a really interesting, sweet couple. They were both pretty broken and lost and I think together they would have truly found peace. Plus they are both magical...who doesn't love a magical couple.
